Longmen Grottoes龙门石窟 · Lóngmén Shíkū — Buddhas carved into riverside cliffs

More than 100,000 Buddhist statues carved into the limestone cliffs on both banks of the Yi River near Luoyang, over four centuries from the Northern Wei to the Tang. The high point of Chinese stone carving — including a 17-metre Vairocana Buddha with a famously serene smile.

The site

The high point of Chinese stone carving.

The grottoes and niches of Longmen hold the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese Buddhist art of the late Northern Wei and Tang dynasties (316–907). Entirely devoted to Buddhism, and carved into the cliffs on both sides of the Yi River, they represent the summit of Chinese stone sculpture.

The work spans a stylistic revolution — from the elongated, otherworldly figures of the Northern Wei to the fuller, more human Tang forms — sponsored by emperors, empresses and ordinary donors alike. The presiding Fengxian Temple carving, a 17-metre Vairocana Buddha, is said to have been modelled on the empress Wu Zetian.

Highlights

Along the West Hill cliffs.

The masterpieces line the West (near) bank; the East bank and Xiangshan Temple across the river add context and the best photo angle back. Walk it north to south.

When to go

Spring and autumn, on a clear day.

April–May and September–October are the most comfortable in Henan, and Luoyang's famous peony blooms in mid-April. Summers are hot; winters cold but quiet, with cheaper tickets.

Avoid summer midday and the peony-festival and Golden Week crowds. The West Hill cliff path is exposed and gets hot and busy from late morning. Arrive at opening, walk the West Hill first while it's cool and clear, then cross to the East Hill for the light.

Practical notes

For foreign travelers.

  1. Start on the West Hill, where Fengxian Temple and the great Buddhas are, then cross the bridge to the East Hill for the view back.
  2. Book online with your passport; it's an easy fast-train day trip from Xi'an or Zhengzhou.
  3. Bring sun protection — the cliff path has little shade — and water.
  4. Pair it with Luoyang's White Horse Temple or the Shaolin Temple at Dengfeng nearby. See our Xi'an guide.
Before you decide

Questions travelers actually ask.

How do I get to the Longmen Grottoes?
Take the high-speed train to Luoyang Longmen station — about 1.5 hours from Xi'an or 40 minutes from Zhengzhou — then a short bus or taxi to the gate. It's a very doable day trip from either city. Tickets are ¥100 (Apr–Oct) or ¥80 (Nov–Mar), booked online with your passport.
How much time do you need at Longmen?
Two to three hours covers the West Hill masterpieces, a crossing to the East Hill for the view back, and Xiangshan Temple. It's a linear riverside walk of a few kilometres, so wear comfortable shoes and allow more time in summer heat.
What's the must-see carving?
The Fengxian Temple group on the West Hill — a 17-metre seated Vairocana Buddha with an extraordinarily calm expression, flanked by disciples and fierce guardian kings. It's usually said to have been modelled on the Tang empress Wu Zetian, who helped fund it, and it's one of the defining images of Chinese Buddhist art.
Longmen, Yungang or Mogao — how do they differ?
All three are great Buddhist cave sites, but Longmen (Tang, near Luoyang) is the most refined and human in style; Yungang (near Datong) is earlier and more colossal and foreign-influenced; Mogao (Dunhuang) is about painted murals rather than carving. If you can only do one and you're near Xi'an, Longmen is the natural pick.
When is the best time to visit?
April–May and September–October are the most pleasant, and Luoyang's peonies peak in mid-April. Summers are hot on the exposed cliff path; winters are cold but quiet and cheaper. Arrive at opening to beat the heat and crowds; see our crowd calendar.
