Fanjingshan梵净山 · Fànjìngshān — an island of rock in a sea of karst

A solitary mountain of ancient rock rising from Guizhou's karst country, its summit split into twin peaks joined by a footbridge over a sheer gorge — sacred to Buddhists, and home to a snub-nosed monkey found nowhere else on Earth.

The site

A biodiversity island, isolated for millions of years.

Fanjingshan is a mountain of ancient metamorphic rock standing alone in a sea of karst, ranging from 500 to 2,570 metres above sea level. That isolation, going back to the Tertiary period, let a distinct set of plants and animals evolve and survive here largely undisturbed — among them the endemic Fanjingshan fir and the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey, found nowhere else on the planet.

The mountain holds the largest and best-preserved subtropical beech forest anywhere, alongside endangered species such as the Chinese giant salamander, the forest musk deer and the white eared-pheasant. It has also been a sacred Buddhist site for centuries, and the twin summit temples and cliff carvings sit directly on top of this rare ecosystem.

Fanjingshan is both a nature reserve and an active pilgrimage site — expect monks, incense and prayer alongside hikers and photographers at the summit.

When to go

Spring blooms or autumn clarity.

March–May and September–November bring the clearest weather and most comfortable hiking temperatures, with autumn adding color to the forest below the summit.

May–October brings heavy rain that can close the cable car or fog out the summit views entirely. If your dates fall in that window, build in a spare day and stay flexible on which day you go up.

Practical notes

For foreign travelers.

  1. Take an East Gate tourist bus from Tongren Railway Station, South Station, or Fenghuang Airport — services run mainly in the morning.
  2. Ride the cable car up and budget an extra 45 minutes to an hour on foot for the final stretch past Mushroom Rock to the summit.
  3. Check the weather before you go — heavy rain in the May–October window can suspend the cable car.
  4. Wear real hiking shoes; the summit stairs and bridge are steep and can be slick when wet.
Before you decide

Questions travelers actually ask.

How do I get to Fanjingshan from Tongren?
Tourist buses run from Tongren Railway Station, Tongren South Railway Station and Tongren Fenghuang Airport to the mountain's East Gate, taking about 1.5–2 hours, with departures roughly between 06:40 and 10:00.
How much does it cost to visit Fanjingshan?
In peak season (March–November): entry is ¥120, the sightseeing bus is ¥20, and the cable car is ¥90 one-way or ¥160 round-trip. Off-season (December–February) prices drop to ¥100 entry and ¥70/¥120 for the cable car.
Do I still have to walk even if I take the cable car?
Yes. The cable car covers most of the elevation gain, but the final stretch to the twin summit temples — including the climb past Mushroom Rock — is on foot and takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace.
What is the Mercy Bridge?
It's a short stone arch bridge connecting the two peaks of the Red Cloud Golden Summit, spanning the sheer drop of Gold Sword Gorge. Each peak holds its own ancient temple — Shakyamuni Hall and Maitreya Hall — making the crossing the most iconic image of the mountain.
What makes Fanjingshan biologically unique?
Its long isolation as a rock 'island' surrounded by karst let species evolve here that exist nowhere else, including the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey and the Fanjingshan fir. It also holds the largest and best-preserved subtropical beech forest known, plus endangered species like the Chinese giant salamander and forest musk deer.
When should I avoid visiting?
May through October brings the heaviest rain, which can fog out summit views or suspend the cable car. March–May and September–November offer the clearest, most reliable weather for the climb.
